Start: Carlisle Castle, Carlisle; Finish: Baltic Quay, Gateshead
The Wall Ultramarathon is a 70-mile (approx. 113 km) point-to-point endurance event running from Carlisle Castle to Baltic Quay, Gateshead. The route is fully waymarked and designed to be achievable at a steady walking pace (around 3 mph) with a long completion window; organisers publish a latest finish on the morning after the start. Participants are supported by named Pit Stops, medical and welfare teams, professional 4x4 support vehicles and a sweeper bus system to move retired runners. The event is presented as a continuous, fully supported journey through Hadrian’s Wall country on mixed terrain including trails and road.
Rat Race provides detailed logistics including in-person registration the day before, tracker collection, bag-drop and a shuttle service from the finish to local transport hubs; the event is audited to the BS8848 expedition safety standard. Finishers receive a medal and a Rat Rag memento, and entries include a charitable donation to Children with Cancer UK alongside optional Refund Protect and instalment payment options. The event operates a strict 18+ age policy and emphasises overall finish times rather than gender or age podiums, while the organiser reserves the right to alter the route for safety or operational reasons.
