The Montane Summer Spine is a non-stop, 268 mile endurance race along the iconic Pennine Way from Edale (Derbyshire) to Kirk Yetholm (Scottish Borders). This edition is organised by The Spine Race and is run expedition-style with self-reliant competitors covering long day and night sections with minimal outside support. The route features substantial ascent and descent, a strict 156-hour time limit and a limited field of places to manage safety and logistics.
Race infrastructure includes five main checkpoints offering hot meals, drinks, medical crews and selected showers, while a logistics team moves resupply bags between checkpoints. Entry information is provided on the official event page and the race carries an entry fee with a deposit and balance schedule; the organiser also publishes a Race Information Pack and full kit lists for competitors. The event is explicitly described as unsupported racing where competitors may rely on public cafés and pubs but not private pacing or support teams.
