Monaco di Baviera Classic is an unsupported ultracycling challenge that starts and finishes in Munich, Germany, and traverses the Alps and the Dolomites. The fixed base route covers around 1,300 km with approximately 23,550 metres of ascent, using predominantly tarmac with brief gravel and cobbled sections. Designed for resilience and self-reliance, the event sets a hard overall deadline by 27 June 2026, making pacing and strategy essential. Riders experience remote, high-altitude roads and extensive dedicated cycle paths that showcase some of Europe’s most dramatic mountain scenery.
A distinctive feature of the event is its Explorer Points system, which rewards riders for tackling optional high-value segments in addition to the base route. A minimum of 20 points is required to qualify as a finisher, with higher totals improving the final classification. The format is strictly self-supported with no drafting, a mandatory tracker in operation for the entire route, and no e-bikes permitted. Expect live tracking and media coverage to capture progress across iconic passes and renowned bike paths.
Participants receive a practical starter kit and rider services that support independent racing without external assistance. While remaining true to the unsupported ethos, the organiser provides route files, tracking, showers and a small bag storage service, plus a celebratory finish with commemorative items for successful riders. The blend of alpine grandeur, rigorous self-sufficiency and a clear, points-based classification makes Monaco di Baviera Classic a compelling challenge for experienced long-distance cyclists.
