Lipno Ice Marathon challenges endurance athletes on the frozen expanse of Lipno Lake, starting from the beach of Campsite Jestřábí I. in Černá v Pošumaví. Distances include a 42 km marathon, a 22 km half marathon, and a 10 km course for youth categories, all run in a marked corridor on snow and ice, with alternatives along the lakeshore if conditions require. The event emphasises safety and preparedness with a mandatory briefing and safety training, electronic timing, and on‑course hot refreshments. Field size is deliberately limited, creating an intimate, adventurous atmosphere in the South Bohemian winter.
Participants camp in their own tents at the race site as part of the entry, adding to the expedition feel of the weekend. A freestyle option may be offered, allowing skates, cross‑country skis, kite, ice yacht or bicycle, provided competitors pass checkpoints within the corridor. Time limits are set to keep the day flowing safely, with the marathon capped at six hours and shorter courses adjusted accordingly. A winners’ ceremony rounds off the experience, with diplomas for podium finishers and a cup for the overall champion.
