The 48. Harz-Gebirgslauf is the long-running mountain race held around Wernigerode and through the Harz National Park, with the Brocken summit as its defining landmark. The organisers describe the Brocken-Marathon as "Norddeutschlands schwerster Marathon", and the day includes multiple distances to suit a wide range of participants, from the full Brocken-Marathon to shorter 11 km and 5 km runs and a 2 km Brockenkinder-Lauf for children. The event has been staged since 1978 and is noted for its challenging terrain, scenic forest and mountain trails and a strong regional following.
The 2026 edition is scheduled for 10 October 2026 and the official site notes that registration opens on 1 March 2026. Races on the day include the Brocken-Marathon, Halb-Marathon, 11 km, 5 km, Brockenkinder-Lauf (2 km), organised walking routes (11 km and 25 km) and Nordic walking options, all routed through the Harz landscape with sections that may be affected by mountain weather. Participants are advised to consult the organiser for detailed start times, course specifics and safety notices before travelling.
