The 47. Harz-Gebirgslauf (47th Harz Mountain Run) is a celebrated autumn mountain running festival centred on Himmelpforte in Wernigerode that brings thousands of participants to the Harz National Park every October. Renowned for northern Germany’s toughest marathon, the event blends rugged forest paths, sustained climbs and big scenery across the Brocken, the region’s highest peak. With roots dating back to 1978 it is a cornerstone of the local sporting calendar, offering a demanding challenge for endurance athletes alongside options for families and recreational participants.
Race day offers a festival atmosphere and varied participation across the series weekend. Runners and walkers can choose from the Brocken‑Marathon, a Half‑Marathon, 11.2 km and 4.8 km races, a Brockenkinder 2 km children’s run, and walking/Nordic walking routes. The start and finish area is at Himmelpforte in Wernigerode. Shoe‑mounted EasyChip timing is included for all races—both gross and net times are recorded, with net time used for rankings where applicable.
Operational highlights and time controls are published clearly: Brocken‑Marathon participants must pass the Brocken by 12:00, all routes have a finish cut‑off at 15:00, and the start/finish area closes at 16:00. Expect varied mountain conditions and rapid weather changes on the summit; participants are advised to check the official site for full route, logistics and registration details and to prepare appropriately for sustained elevation and trail terrain.
