The Airborne Freedom Run is a commemorative running event held in and around Arnhem that brings together sport, history and remembrance. The event invites participants to "Run to remember freedom" and also uses the Dutch phrase "Loop voor vrijheid. Herdenk met elke stap." It presents a broad programme of distances and formats, from short children's minis to long trail challenges, enabling runners of many levels to join the act of remembrance. The occasion is framed around the Battle of Arnhem and the wider Airborne Region, offering a reflective atmosphere alongside athletic endeavour.
On race day the event uses multiple start locations such as Papendal, Ginkelse Heide and Otterlo to stage road and trail formats and family-focused activities. Dedicated categories include business and student team entries, military & veterans runs and national-level club participation, emphasising community and partnership. The Airborne Freedom Run positions itself as both a sporting festival and a memorial occasion, combining volunteer and partner support with opportunities for groups and individuals to mark freedom through movement. Practical details, maps and final schedules are provided to participants via the event information pages and the Atleta registration dashboard.
